SC to examine legal challenge to abrogation of Article 370; refers matter to 5-judge Constitution bench

-> The Supreme Court decided to examine the legal challenge against the Centre's decision to abrogate Article 370, which gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir, and referred the matter to a five-judge Constitution bench.

-> The apex court issued notices to the Centre and Jammu and Kashmir administration on a batch of pleas challenging the Presidential order by which Article 370 was abrogated.

-> A bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi was not in agreement with the Centre that there was no need for issuance of notice in the matter as Attorney General K K Venugopal and Solicitor General were marking their presence in the court.

Wing Commander S Dhami becomes first female officer to become Flight Commander

-> Indian Air Force’s Wing Commander S Dhami has become the first female officer in the country to become the Flight Commander of a flying unit.

-> Dhami took over as Flight Commander of a Chetak helicopter unit at Hindon airbase.

Govt to set up 75 new medical colleges in next three years

-> The Union Cabinet has approved setting up of 75 new Medical Colleges by 2021-22. The move will add 15,700 more MBBS seats in the country.

-> These medical colleges will be established in under-served areas having no such colleges with at least 200 bedded district hospitals.

Nauru's Parliament elects former human rights lawyer Lionel Aingimea as President

-> Former human rights lawyer Lionel Aingimea has been elected Nauru's new President, two days after results showed Baron Waqa was not re-elected after six years in power.

-> Mr Aingimea won a parliamentary vote for the presidency 12-6 over rival David Adeang.

India’s first FinTech centre of excellence set up in Chennai

-> Software Technology Parks of India (STPI) has set up a ‘Centre of Excellence in FinTech’ in Chennai, first of its kind in India, with an objective to provide resources in terms of mentoring, technology support and funding for FinTech startups.

-> Called ‘FinBlue’, the centre intends to incubate over 58 startups in the next five years.

Govt permits 100% FDI in coal mining, associated infrastructure

-> The Union Cabinet has relaxed Foreign Direct Investment rule for foreign single-brand retailers and also permitted foreign investment in contract manufacturing and coal mining.

-> On FDI in single-brand retailing, the Cabinet has expanded the definition of mandatory 30 per cent domestic sourcing norm.

-> Piyush Goyal said that 100 per cent FDI under automatic route in coal mining and associated infrastructure has been approved.

BSE launches India’s first interest rate options

-> Leading stock exchange BSE launched trading in interest rate options based on Government of India securities.

-> The exchange is the first to provide trading of interest rate options.

-> “BSE had launched interest rate futures in January 2014, which has an average market share of 40 per cent and has now expanded its offerings in interest rate derivatives with the launch of options,”.

India first in the world to launch facial biometric data based identity document

-> India has become the first country in the world to issue Biometric Seafarer Identity Document, BSID, capturing the facial biometric data of seafarers.

-> Nine data collection centres have been set up at Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Noida, Goa, New Mangalore, Kochi, Vizag and Kandla for the issue of BSID.

-> Every Indian seafarer who possesses a valid Continuous Discharge Certificate issued by the government will be eligible for issue of a BSID.

IIT researchers develop India's first spine surgery robot for less painful, affordable surgeries

-> Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) have developed India's first 'Spine Surgery Robot,' for minimally invasive and open spine surgeries that are less painful and more affordable.

-> The project funded by HRD Ministry, is India's first robotic system for spinal surgery - making such procedures right-first-time across skill level of surgeons and affordable to patients, the researchers at IIT Madras claim.

Priyadarshini Pawar became the first Indian woman to successfully complete the 1,200-km Paris-Brest-Paris circuit.

-> The Indian Navy congratulated Priyadarshini Pawar, the daughter of one of its officers, for becoming the first Indian woman to successfully complete the 1,200-km Paris-Brest-Paris circuit.

-> Paris-Brest-Paris circuit is France's oldest long-distance cycling event.

Hina Khan becomes the first Indian actress to attend the Independence Day parade in New York

-> Hina Khan celebrated Independence Day in New York as she was invited to be the guest at the India Day Parade organised by the Federation of Indian Associations and NBA.
