Manmohan Singh, Neeraj Shekhar elected unopposed to Rajya Sabha

-> Former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh was declared elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha from Rajasthan.

-> The former PM was nominated by the Congress for the lone seat while the BJP did not field any candidate for the by-poll, necessitated due to the death of Rajya Sabha MP Madan Lal Saini.

-> In Uttar Pradesh, BJP candidate Neeraj Shekhar, was declared elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha. No other nomination had been filed for the seat.

PM Narendra Modi to visit France, UAE, Bahrain

-> Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be on a three-nation state visit to France, UAE and Bahrain from 22nd to 26th of this month.

-> The Prime Minister will visit Bahrain between 24th and 25th of August.

-> This will be the first-ever Prime Ministerial visit from India to the Kingdom of Bahrain.

Defence Minister reviews functioning of IMAC and IFC-IOR

-> Defence Minister Rajnath Singh visited the Information Management and Analysis Centre, IMAC and Information Fusion Centre - Indian Ocean Region, IFC-IOR located at Gurugram to review the functioning of both centres.

-> IFC-IOR is a collaborative initiative by the Indian Navy in coordination with partner nations and multi-national maritime agencies to Enhance Maritime Domain Awareness and Maritime Security.

5th Meeting of India-Nepal Joint Commission to be held in Kathmandu

-> The 5th Meeting of India-Nepal Joint Commission will be held in Kathmandu on 21- 22 August. Minister for External Affairs of Dr S. Jaishankar and Nepal’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Pradeep Kumar Gyawali will co-chair the meeting and lead their respective delegations.

Task force on new direct tax law submits report to Nirmala Sitharaman

-> A Task Force appointed by the Central Government to draft New Direct Tax law submitted its report to Finance and Corporate Affairs Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.

-> The report was submitted by Convenor of the Task force Akhilesh Ranjan.

-> The Task Force was constituted by the Government in November 2017 to review the existing Income Tax Act, 1961 and to draft a new direct tax law in consonance with economic needs of the country.

Scientists discover new pain-sensing organ

-> Octopus-like Schwann cells that engulf nerves in skin can sense pain, experiments show

-> The study has revealed these Schwann cells have an octopus-like shape.

-> After examining tissues, the team found the body of the cells sits below the outer layer of the skin, but that the cells have long extensions that wrap around the ends of pain-sensing nerve cells that extend up into the epidermis, the outer layer of the skin.

India emits the most sulphur dioxide in the world

-> India is the largest emitter of sulphur dioxide (SO2) in the world, contributing more than 15 per cent of global anthropogenic emissions, according to a new report by Greenpeace.

IIT Guwahati researchers develop membranes that can separate oil and water

-> Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati have developed two distinct and special membranes that can separate oil and water, even under harsh conditions.

-> These membranes are super-water repellent in air and super oil-repellent in water.

-> These can separate complex mixtures of oil and water at practically relevant settings.

-> This kind of separation is important in environmental applications like oil spill management.

Labuschagne Replaces Smith to Become First Like-for-like Substitution in Cricket

-> Former Australia skipper Steve Smith has been ruled out of the remainder of Lord’s Test with concussion after a blow on the neck by a nasty Jofra Archer bouncer.

-> That puts him in doubt for the third Ashes Test in Leeds too.

-> All-rounder Marnus Labuschagne has been brought as Smith’s replacement, which also makes the former, first player to come in as a like-for-like substitution for concussion.

-> An annual worldwide celebration, the day is dedicated to the art, craft, science and history of photography.

-> In the modern world, the World Photography Day aims to inspire photographers across the planet to share a single photo with a simple purpose of sharing their world with the world.

3000th railway station gets Wi-Fi:

-> Ellenabad railway station under Bikaner Division of North Western Railway, became the 3000th station in the country to have free public Wi-Fi.

-> A historic town in Haryana, Ellenabad is situated at the north of the Ghaggar- Hakra river, and serves as a port of entry into Haryana from Rajasthan.

PM Modi to receive UAE’s highest civil honour 'Order of Zayed' during his visit on August 23

-> “Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be travelling to the UAE and Bahrain from 23-25th August.

-> PM Modi would receive the Order of Zayed, the highest civil decoration of the UAE which was conferred earlier in April 2019 in recognition of leadership of Prime Minister Modi for giving a big boost to bilateral relations between the two countries.”
