Centre unveils plan for coastal zone management

-> The Environment Ministry has unveiled a draft plan that will dictate how prospective infrastructure projects situated along the coast ought to be assessed before they can apply for clearance.

-> The draft Environmental and Social Management Framework (ESMF) is part of a World Bank-funded project.

-> The document lays out guidelines out for coastal States to adopt when they approve and regulate projects in coastal zones.

-> So far three coastal States, namely Gujarat, Odisha and West Bengal, have prepared Integrated Coastal Zone Management Plans with support from the World Bank.

-> Such plans would be prepared for the selected coastal stretches in other States/UT, the project notes.

22nd National Conference on E-Governance inaugurated in Meghalaya

-> In Meghalaya, the two-day-long 22nd National Conference on E-Governance was inaugurated by Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma in the presence of Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region Dr Jitendra Singh at State Convention Centre, Shillong.

India, Bangladesh to set up committee for optimum utilisation of water resources

-> India and Bangladesh have agreed to set up a Joint Technical committee for optimum utilisation of Ganges water as being received by Bangladesh under the Ganga Water Sharing Treaty 1996.

-> Both the countries also agreed to prepare a framework for interim water-sharing agreement for eight rivers including Feni, Gumti and Teesta.

-> Both the countries also discussed issues related to pollution of trans boundary rivers.

NSE, SGX get regulator’s nod for joint F&O products at GIFT City

-> SGX, the Singapore bourse, and the NSE have buried the hatchet.

-> Both the exchanges received approval from SEBI to operate jointly in Gujarat International Finance Tec (GIFT) City, the international finance city under the proposed programme ‘connect’. Simply put, Nifty index, which is trading on SGX in Singapore, will be traded on a joint platform between the NSE and the SGX in GIFT City.

-> “The Connect model, which is subject to further approvals from relevant local authorities, will enable SGX and NSE IFSC members to access Nifty products in GIFT while managing their exposures through their respective clearing corporations,”.

Jana Small Finance Bank receives Scheduled Bank status from RBI

-> Jana Small Finance Bank Ltd announced that it has got the status of a Scheduled Bank from RBI.

-> The Bengaluru-headquartered bank, established as a financial services company in 2009, said it presently operates 260 branches and 338 asset centres serving over 5.5 million customers in different states.

RBI announces NEFT facility will be available round-the-clock for customers

-> The Reserve Bank of India announced that the National Electronic Funds Transfer (NEFT) facility will be available round-the-clock for the customers.

-> Currently, NEFT payment system operated by the Reserve Bank as a retail payment system is available for customers from 8 AM to 7 PM on all working days of the week except 2nd and 4th Saturdays of the month.

IIT partners with NIOT to harness electricity from ocean waves

-> Researchers from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras and National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT) are developing turbines that can harness the power of ocean waves to generate electricity.

-> The research is being headed at IIT Madras by Abdus Samad of Department of Ocean Engineering, who specialises on extracting energy from the ocean waves.

-> The work of Samad and his team is aimed at meeting renewable energy and climate change objectives of the government of India.

Scientists create the world's thinnest gold

-> British scientists have unveiled what they say is the thinnest unsupported gold ever created.

-> At just 0.47 nanometres – one million times thinner than a human finger nail – it is regarded as 2D because it is just two layers of atoms sitting on top of one another. In other words, all atoms are surface atoms: there are no “bulk” atoms hidden beneath the surface.

-> The research team from the University of Leeds believes the material could have wide-scale applications in the medical device and electronics industries, and as a catalyst to speed up chemical reactions in a range of industrial processes.

Bowler makes cricket history with insane world record

-> South African spinner Colin Ackermann has become the first player in T20 cricket history to claim a seven-wicket haul.

-> Ackermann claimed the new world record when he took 7-18 in the Vitality Blast - England’s equivalent of Australia’s Big Bash League.

Transcontinental Race: Germany's Fiona Kolbinger becomes first female winner of endurance race

-> Germany's Fiona Kolbinger has beaten more than 200 men to become the first woman to win the Transcontinental Race, cycling more than 2,485 miles across Europe in just over 10 days.

-> Transcontinental was launched in 2013, beginning in London and finishing in Istanbul, with Belgium's Kristof Allegaert winning the opening two events before Josh Ibett became the first British rider to win the endurance race in 2015.

ISRO announces Vikram Sarabhai Journalism Award in Space Science, Technology and Research

-> As part of centenary year celebrations of Dr. Vikram Sarabhai, father of Indian space programme, ISRO institutes two categories of awards in journalism.

-> ISRO has announced its “Vikram Sarabhai Journalism Award in Space Science, Technology and Research” to recognize and reward journalists who have actively contributed towards the field of space science, applications, and research.

-> The nominations are open to all Indians who have a good experience in journalism. The articles published from 2019 to 2020 will be considered, says the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).
